The English along with Welsh Drawn Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by sporting legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with Wales have been drawn in the same pool for the World Cup in 2027, promising a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw mirrors their memorable meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the English team's surprise early exit.

Other Notable Group Pairings

The Irish alongside Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool together, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they secured a 36-14 win, with Scotland failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as underdogs in France, round out that same group.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from defending champions and top-ranked the Springboks until the final, assuming the Springboks top their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

Should the groups play out according to the current world rankings, further top favourites like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from both England and Ireland all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Major Opener

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn together with their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will open the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match aimed at jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are grouped with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Spain and Canada as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the twenty who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a round of 16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the winner of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the second-placed team from Pool B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six group winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
