The Compassion of Strangers: How a Gentleman I Had Just Met Assisted Me Land the Job That Transformed My Existence

During the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a backpacking trip to Europe with a friend. Since my travel mate was considering starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had planned a 14-day stopover there before heading to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a large multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side called International House. Once we unpacked, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we got some food, found a table, and started talking to other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I did, and I explained that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at Columbia University – right next door to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I ought to seek a position with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that night. The engineering student came up to me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off explained to my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

In typical New York fashion – a place where opportunities abound – she said: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for three years. One of the benefits was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his identity, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I lacked the courage or self-assurance to reach out at an prestigious college and ask for a job. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

Critically, that role at the university led me to a role in Europe where I got to know my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share a family of four kids. That encounter altered everything. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
