Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Soldiers Group

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with deep backstory, a wide array of heroes, and a gripping narrative including celestial beings, evil spirits, and sinister influences expanding in strength within Dol-Makjar.

Note: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season follow below.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

The third episode finished on a dramatic pause and introduced the premier party of adventurers who will split off from the primary party to begin their own adventure, distinct from the remaining groups.

This warrior group consists of Teor (played by Travis Willingham), the agile character (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (the cast member), Wicander (the player), and Kattigan (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

With a large ensemble, it was evident from the outset that keeping everyone at one table would be unworkable.

That’s why, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Overture, connecting the characters’ stories before branching into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Strategists, and Questers.

What Defines the Combat Party

As described by the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for players who are drawn to a classically intense battle-oriented gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are scarce.

Upon first impression, characters like the reluctant priest the cleric might look out of place, but the actions of the third episode demonstrate why these particular heroes are best suited for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

First, the team knows exactly where to head next after a violent first encounter with the enemy group.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose death started the story’s plot—exploited The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, invading the hidden lair, assaulting the rogue, and swiping all the powerful objects to dispose of.

Casimir then cleared his obligations and ran away to a secure base in the northern region, above the city, with Cyd close behind.

Individual Reasons

Moreover, each member has a personal reason to leave the city Dol-Makjar:

  • The rogue, as the companion and closest confidant, desires vengeance.
  • Kattigan knows Timmony and warns that it is a nasty place.
  • The strong character and The healer, having resisted his relatives’ demands to kill Teor and instead saved him, have no other options.
  • However, their position as prominent individuals in House Halovar could enable the group reach places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Furthermore, The fighter swore a life debt to The cleric for his rescue and will now follow him wherever.

Wanted and Hunted

Lastly, all of them are sought by the rulers that govern Dol-Makjar for a multiple motives, making staying in the city dangerous:

  • The rogue and The character are notorious outlaws.
  • Tyranny and Wicander defied the influential house and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
  • Teor is marked for death by House Halovar.

This means them little choice but to travel to the northern region in quest for Casimir.

Upcoming Developments

From the latest episode’s Cooldown, we discover that the Soldiers table will be absent in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight participants to assemble the Explorers and Strategists groups.

Viewers can anticipate finding out which players will be in which group in the story’s concluding setup installment, released on the upcoming Thursday.
