Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had allowed 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or did there exist any cohesion maintaining its structure from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him admitted that the board had not mentioned a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Speculation that he could resign were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy during matches as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their first five games, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, it has been hard to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unexpected Comeback

At least one man kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this season. He completed the last one on loan at Parma and, early this summer, Lazio were pushing for him to stay there temporarily. The transfer ban forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in that campaign, almost all of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to determine the nature of the player's talent. Originally described as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
